Originally from Midlands, UK, Ratvinder graduated with an Honours Bachelor of Science degree in Computer Science/Software Engineering in 1994 from the University of Birmingham. A year later he completed his Master's degree in Software Engineering from the University of Aston in Birmingham. In 2001 he graduated with a Doctorate degree in "A Visual Metaphor-Based Tool for a Search-engine User Interface" from the University of Wolverhampton.

Ratvinder moved to Canada in 2003 and started at Laurentian University in 2004. Previous employment include lecturing in Computer Science at the University of Wolverhampton, and working as a Database Manager for a British Government funded Trust.

Ratvinder enjoys off-road mountain biking and running. He has competed in local and national 5k, 10k, and half-marathon races. He has also completed a 233km bike ride seven times, and made two parachute descents from a height of 2000 feet.
